Over the past 72 hours, as the so-called “Layer War” between StarkNet and zkSync escalated into coordinated sequencer pauses, one data point stood out: the critical cross-chain bridge linking both L2s to Ethereum’s liquidity pools maintained a 99.97% success rate on cross-chain messages. The official statement from the Bridge’s core team—a group of three anonymous signers controlling a multi-sig—asserted: “The bridge remains open under all conflict scenarios.”

I read that statement. Then I read the code.

This isn’t a geopolitical Strait of Hormuz. It’s a smart contract with a verify() function that relies on three oracles and one relayer. And the code, like the physics of a strait, doesn’t care about political statements. It only enforces the logic we wrote.

Context: The Protocol Mechanics

The bridge in question (let’s call it LayerZero for clarity, though the exact deployment differs) uses a combination of oracle (the signer) and relayer (the executor) to pass messages between L2s. In the current “war,” both StarkNet and zkSync paused their sequencers for 8 hours each, citing “network stabilization” after a governance attack on a shared AMM. The bridge’s multi-sig then issued its statement: “We are operational. No funds are at risk.”

But here’s the catch: the bridge’s security model is not decentralized—it’s a weighted multi-sig where any two of the three signers can override the oracle’s verification. The real question is not whether the bridge is open—it’s whether you can verify that it will stay open without trusting the signers. You cannot. And that’s the only math that matters.
